JA Staff Earn Microlearning Credential with Rumie
May 3, 2023
Rumie, one of JA’s nonprofit partners, is an open community of motivated learners and volunteers working in a technology ecosystem that has been working with JA to create micro-lessons for students, volunteers, and staff.
In the first round of our partnership, a group of 50 JA global staff members learned the ins and outs of creating “bytes,” innovative bite-sized microlearning opportunities that have been shown to be 22% more effective than traditional learning.
Examples might include bytes that teach youth how to register a business name, show volunteers how to access additional resources as they plan their time with JA students, share ideas with teachers about expanding JA’s learning experiences, or showing fellow staff members can to access an intranet.
Bytes are a natural fit for JA, one of the largest educators in the world. You can see, below, how Rumie might be used in a classroom; now expand that idea by 95,000+ schools in 115+ countries, and you get a sense of the scope of Rumie’s potential in the JA network.
With a second Rumie-trained JA staff cohort in the offing, Rumie has released a white paper about our partnership, titled “How a Global NGO Boosts Employee Engagement with Microlearning.”
Download your own copy of the white paper, get in touch with Rumie to book a workshop, or read on (below) about the first staff microcredential—cobranded by JA Worldwide and Rumie—to come from JA University.

Imagine if you had the expertise to create micro-lessons that teach others how to use a system you manage, master the challenges of running a small business, or learn a brand-new skill. We invited JA staff from around the world to do just this.
Working in small cohorts, 50 JA staff members from around the world learned how to create microlearning classes (called "bytes"), launching JA Worldwide's first official staff-skilling opportunity under the JA University banner. Each cohort created custom microlearning bytes using Rumie, a learning platform that enables our staff to interact, create, and launch innovative learning opportunities. Staff who completed the course also earned a first-of-its-kind credential, cobranded by JA Worldwide and Rumie, which they can add to their LinkedIn profiles.
Although cohort members started off with the understanding the bytes could be created for anyone, they quickly homed in on the possibilities for youth, especially around digital skills, financial health, and entrepreneurship. They also created bytes aimed at helping staff engage modern learners, utilize elearning opportunities, develop a better understanding of student learning styles, and measure and demonstrate impact. The bytes they created were shown to improve concept retention, facilitate better learner engagement, more effectively motivate learners, improve collaborative learning engagement, and result in better performance and demonstrated ability in learners.
In addition to this microlearning collaboration with Rumie, we’ll continue to roll out more learning opportunities and official credentials in the coming years.
